Ilmatar is looking into developing an industry-scale solar power park in the Loimaa area. The project area totals approximately 170 hectares, producing up to 130 gigawatt hours (GWp) per year providing electricity for up to 35,000 apartments.
“The Loimaa region is a great area for solar radiation energy in Finland. The city has now made reservation for the park, allowing us to take the project forward. Tentatively, we expect the area to be able to support a park with production of approximately 100–130 MWp. “The park produces 100 to 130 gigawatt hours of energy per year.” While we have parks of similar size in development elsewhere in Finland, the only one ready move on to construction is the approximately 5-megawatt park in Joroinen,” says Antti Tiri, Business Development Manager.
The solar power park in Loimaa will produce enough electricity to meet the yearly demand of 7,000 houses or 35,000 apartments.
The Loimaa project is a natural step forward for Ilmatar to become the leading producer of renewable energy in the Nordics.
“I am glad that Loimaa wants to be a pioneer in developing solar power and partner with Ilmatar, showing the way to all of Finland in a grand scale. If we can go ahead with the plans without issues, the Loimaa area may produce clean Finnish solar power in the next few years,” estimates Antti Keskinen, Ilmatar’s Director of Business Development.
The renewable energy park will also be a significant source of income and an environmental achievement for both the city of Loimaa and its residents.
“The park area will generate rental income and tax revenue for the city throughout the park’s life cycle – for up to forty years. Impact on employment is another significant factor. With the solar power park, Loimaa will also considerably further the carbon neutrality target set for the city and Finland in general,” Keskinen says, describing the benefits solar power will bring to the region.
